Raising Funds for Mind

French White Rococo Bed - 10% Donated to Mind

 Our Story

As a small family-run furniture business we’re lucky enough to have the chance to really get to know our customers and chat to them on a level that may not be possible in bigger organisations. Recently I shared a blog about an issue very close to our hearts (My Socially Awkward Life), and the response via comments, emails and on social media really blew us away.

My middle son is autistic, and turned 15 last year. Around 18 months ago I desperately needed some help and advice as he seemed to be on a downward spiral mentally. He had become a shadow of his former gregarious, funny self. He was suffering from daily violent meltdowns and symptoms of anxiety and OCD. He was no longer eating healthily and his sleeping pattern was completely disrupted.

I was sick with worry and desperately trying to get the help he needed and didn't know where to look for help.

  What is autism?

An autism diagnosis is based on what’s called the ‘Triad of Impairments’. People on the spectrum have difficulties with social interaction, social communication and social imagination. As autism is a sensory processing disorder many people on the autism spectrum, children and adults alike, can also suffer from anxiety related disorders. The rate of anxiety in the general population is around 18% but for people on the spectrum this rate can be as high as 84% according to some studies.

Autism and mental health

I battled for over a year to get help for our child. And it seems I’m not the only one. There are hundreds of families of Autistic children all over the UK going through the same every day. I’d been told anxiety was “part of autism” and there was “nothing that could be done” about it, by several mental health professionals, but this just didn’t sit right for me.

So, feeling lost in a sea of information and stuck in a system that I didn’t understand, let alone know how to navigate, I contacted Mind, the UK charity who offer support and advice on mental health problems. Their help and advice was invaluable. For the first time, someone listened to the problems facing our family and offered support and valuable information to help us.

Whilst my son will always have a diagnosis of Autism, we are now making baby steps to conquering the anxiety and OCD behaviours. We are now moving forwards and have a wonderful team of mental health professionals who support and help us work towards a better future for my son.

Raising funds for Mind

Without the advice and help of Mind and the excellent resources available on their website I don’t think we would be where we are now. This story is sadly by no means unique, something that was reinforced with the feedback we received to the blog. The overarching theme of the responses we had were about a lack of support and information– this is what inspired us to raise funds.

We’ll now be donating 10% from every sale of the Rococo French White Bed (our bestseller) to Mind.

“We’d like to say a huge thank you to Newtons Furniture for choosing to donate a percentage of their bed sales to Mind. Every penny raised will fund Mind’s vital work including the Mind Infoline, our advice services and the campaigning Mind does to secure a better deal for the one in four of us who experience a mental health problem every year.”
